Sylvia Reuben passed away at her residence in Temecula, CA on Tuesday, June 27th , 2023. Sylvia was born the oldest of two children in Seattle, Washington on February 11th , 1946. She was preceded by her father, Joseph Isham Staton Sr, her mother, Aretha Glover Staton, her younger brother, Joseph Isaiah Staton Jr, and her husband of 41 years, Dr. Leedell Reuben. She is survived by her two daughters, Adrienne White (Ronald White), and Annita Reuben, and her five granddaughters, Amelia White, Abigail White, Annette White, Alaina White, and Rosamund White. Sylvia spent her formative years in Seattle, Washington, attending high School at Garfield High (Class of 1964) before being accepted to and attending Western Washington College (University) for her higher education. Sylvia was gifted at music and dance and played the piano. Sylvia continued her musical studies at Western Washington College (University). While attending college, Sylvia was votedHomecoming Queen (Queen Sigrid XXX) in 1967. Sylvia graduated from Western Washington College(University) and received her bachelor’s degree in 1968. Following her graduation, Sylvia began teaching 5 th grade at Gatewood Elementary School in WestSeattle. During her time teaching in Seattle, Sylvia met and married Dr. Leedell Reuben. Sylvia andLeedell were married in Seattle in 1972. Sylvia continued teaching in Seattle until she and Leedell leftWashington due to Leedell’s military commitments. Sylvia loved teaching and became a substituteteacher on and off until her retirement. Following Leedell’s honorable discharge from the military, Sylvia and Leedell settled down in Stockton,CA with their two daughters. Sylvia was very active in the community and in the church. Sylvia broughther love of teaching and the skills she possessed working with children to bore as she became theDirector of Children’s Ministry at Central United Methodist Church in Stockton, CA. Sylvia held thisposition for many years and touched the lives of numerous youths. Sylvia and her family were alsoactive members of Jack and Jill of America Incorporated, an organization committed to improving the quality of life for African American children and all children through educational, cultural, civic, andsocial opportunities. Following Leedell’s retirement, Sylvia and Leedell moved to Dallas, GA where they joined Zion BaptistChurch in Marietta, GA. Sylvia and Leedell both became very involved in their church community. Sylvia and Leedell chaired the Zion Baptist Church Health Ministry from 2011 – 2016. On March 30 th , 2014, Sylvia accepted the Ministerial Ordination Certificate posthumously for her husband Leedell Reuben. On November 9th , 2014, Sylvia became one of six women dedicated to the Zion Baptist Church Mother/Deaconess Ministry. Sylvia will be laid to rest with her husband, Dr. Leedell Reuben, in Miramar National Cemetery in SanDiego, CA on July 14th , 2023. Sylvia loved the Lord and believed that all good things came from God. Allpraise and glory to His name.
